NJ & NY IRP AND IFTA APPLICATIONS

NJ OR NY IRP AND IFTA APPLICATIONS

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a cooperative agreement that regulates commercial vehicles traveling within the 48 continental United States and most Canadian provinces. Under the IRP, interstate carriers must file an application with the jurisdiction in which they are based.

If you are a motor carrier and travel out-of your base state and consist of:

A power unit with two axles and a GVWR more than 26,000 pounds
A power unit with three or more axles, regardless of GVWR
A vehicle combination, when the weight of said combination exceeds 26,000 pounds GVWR IRP registration fees are based on miles traveled or miles expected to be traveled in participating jurisdictions.

Exceptions: Recreational vehicles, vehicles displaying restricted plates, charter buses, school buses, trailers and vehicles operated under separate reciprocity agreements that IRP has not superceded. These vehicles can operate using standard commercial registrations.

IFTA

Once you have obtained your IRP Plates you are also required to have in your possession a current IFTA permit & stickers adhered to your vehicle. IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is a cooperative agreement that regulates commercial vehicles traveling within the 48 continental United States and most Canadian provinces. The base jurisdiction establishes the jurisdiction to which a carrier will license, obtain decals and make fuel tax payments. Quarterly taxes are to be prepared and will be assessed penalties, interest & non renewal of permits if not filed on time. Once paid your base jurisdiction will then distribute the appropriate amounts of tax owed to each IFTA member jurisdiction for you. EL Transportation has programs that can take care of all this Tax reporting for you. Please inquire for complete details on joining the program.
